Homenaje

Resumen: En este artículo se repasa, a modo de homenaje, la trayectoria del autor teatral José María Rodríguez Méndez. Se hace también una semblanza de su persona, imprescindible para comprender muchos aspectos de su obra; comenzando por su madrileñismo, por sus vivencias infantiles en el barrio popular de Lavapiés y por su temprana afición al teatro. También por su etapa barcelonesa, que inspiraría alguna de sus mejores obras. Se comenta críticamente su adscripción a la “Generación realista”, se destacan sus principales aportaciones al teatro español contemporáneo y las dificultades que tuvo para estrenar sus obras, antes y después de la dictadura franquista.

ON THE CENTENARY OF JOSÉ MARÍA RODRÍGUEZ MÉNDEZ

Abstract: This article reviews, by way of tribute, the career of playwright José María Rodríguez Méndez. It also provides a profile of the man himself, which is essential for understanding many aspects of his work, beginning with his love for Madrid, his childhood experiences in the working-class neighbourhood of Lavapiés, and his early love of theatre. It also covers his time in Barcelona, which would inspire some of his best works. It critically discusses his affiliation with the ‘Realist Generation’, highlighting his main contributions to contemporary Spanish theatre and the difficulties he faced in getting his plays staged, both before and after the Franco dictatorship.
