Monográfico: Las artes circenses en España

Resumen: En este artículo se describe el auge y declive del circo ecuestre como espectáculo de gran éxito en España durante el siglo XIX hasta la llegada del cinematógrafo y de la conmoción social que suponen las guerras en Europa durante el siglo XX. Se presta especial atención al papel de la arquitectura que acoge el espectáculo –teatros-circos de ladrillo, plazas de toros o estructuras portátiles– y se incluye una lista de las compañías ecuestres que actuaron en España.

ARRIVAL OF THE CIRCUS IN SPAIN: ACTIVITY OF THE EQUESTRIAN TROUPES

Abstract: This article describes the rise and fall of the equestrian circus as a highly successful spectacle in Spain during the 19th century until the arrival of the cinematograph and the social upheaval caused by the wars in Europe during the 20th century. Special attention is paid to the role of the architecture that hosted the spectacle - brick theatres-circuses, bullrings or portable structures - and a list of the equestrian companies that performed in Spain is included.
